These aren't throwaway tips

How to Clean a Garbage Disposal

Just like your pearly whites, the best garbage disposal is one that’s looked after properly — just don’t try to floss it. Here are some tips for how to clean a garbage disposal:

Tip 1: Go for a long run

With the water running, keep your disposal running a bit longer after grinding. It helps ensure the small bits have washed down the drain.

Tip 2: Deep clean and deodorize

A quick and efficient way to clean your garbage disposal is Liquid-Plumr® Disposal & Drain Cleaner. Just toss a quick-dissolving pack into your disposal to clear away gunk and freshen with a citrus scent!

Tip 3: Chew-se Carefully

Just because it’s biodegradable doesn’t mean you should put it in. Keep fibrous material out of the disposal (celery, cornhusks, onion skins…) and avoid disposing starchy materials like potato skins and banana peels; they create a sticky paste that make it hard for the blades to spin.

Tip 4: Please no grease

It’s not a good idea to pour grease down any of your pipes because, well, clogs. In your garbage disposal, grease compromises the disposal motor, causing it to slow down.

Tip 5: Don’t get handsy

Remember: If you choose to remove a blockage by hand, always double-check you’ve unplugged the power to the disposal unit and that it doesn’t turn on.
